This quirky, egg-shaped allium adds a playful twist to your garden. Allium sphaerocephalon begins with chartreuse-green buds that slowly deepen into rich, claret-purple as they mature atop 24-inch stems. Ideal for planting in large sweeps along sunny borders, they deliver charm year after year. These easygoing bulbs are unfazed by deer and rodents—and a magnet for bees!

Allium Planting & Care

(Allium Sphaerocephalon)

  • Plant your allium bulbs in mid to late fall, before the first hard frost.
  • Plant in borders or containers in sun or part shade. Make sure the soil is well draining.
  • Space the bulbs about twice the bulb diameter apart. Bury the bulbs at a depth roughly three times its height.
  • Place the allium bulbs with the pointed side facing upwards.
  • Cover with soil, firm gently and water well.
