There's a reason Spanish bluebells are a woodland classic. Also known as Scilla campanulata, this is the bluebell most gardeners picture — tall, upright stems hung with bell-shaped flowers in a clear, cool blue that lights up shade and borders alike in late spring.
Each bulb is remarkably generous, producing up to 100 bell-shaped blooms as it settles in. Spanish bluebells are tough and easygoing, happy in full sun or partial shade, which makes them one of the simplest ways to naturalize a woodland edge, fill a rock garden, or stock a cutting patch. Plant them once in fall and they return year after year, spreading gently into drifts of blue. Winter hardy across Canada to zone 4, and deer tend to leave them alone.
