Munstead Wood (Ausbernard) produces rich, velvety crimson blooms with lighter outer petals. The large, deeply cupped flowers gradually open to a shallower shape and carry a strong Old Rose fragrance with fruity notes of blackberry, blueberry, and damson. A bushy, spreading shrub with attractive red-bronze young foliage that matures to mid-green. Introduced by David Austin in 2007.

While Munstead Wood is no longer available, we recommend Gabriel Oak as an excellent alternative. It offers a similar rich colour and is a particularly healthy variety with excellent disease resistance.

Rose Planting & Care

(David Austin Rose - Munstead Wood)

  • Rehydrate your rose. Unpack the rose quickly after receiving, trim 1/2" off the root tips and canes to keep them fresh.
  • Soak the roots up to the base of the cane for 2 hours - overnight.
  • Choose a site with a minimum of 4 hours of sun per day and dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and as deep as the roots (typically 16" wide x 16" deep)
  • Loosen the soil at the bottom the hole for better root growth then create a small mound in the base of the hole and drape the roots around it.
  • position the bud union (where shoots emerge) at ground level and backfill with the original soil. Lightly firm the soil around the plant.
  • Give the rose a good initial watering after plant and maintain regular watering. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
