Eranthis cilicica, commonly known as Winter Aconite, pops up just as winter begins to retreat, bringing cheer with its golden buttercup-style blooms and fresh green ruff of foliage. These early risers form low-growing mats of color and look especially magical when planted en masse or paired with Snowdrops. A member of the buttercup family, Winter Aconite prefers well-drained soil and dappled light, thriving in woodland areas, under shrubs, or nestled into rock gardens where they can naturalize undisturbed.

Fall Bulb Planting Guide

  • Flower bulbs are a low-maintenance and rewarding way to add colour to your garden.
  • Fall-planted bulbs thrive when exposed to cool soil temperatures. They can be planted anytime from late September into January.
  • These bulbs lie dormant through winter and burst into bloom in the spring and early summer.
  • When you receive your bulbs, be sure to read the planting instructions included with each variety. Planting depth can vary depending on the size and type of the bulb, as well as how tall the mature plant will be.
  • As a general guideline, bulbs should be placed with the pointed end facing up and covered with about 15 cm (6 inches) of soil.
