Spanish Roja is a bold and spicy hardneck garlic, perfect for gardeners in cooler climates. With its complex, layered flavour and heat, this variety stands out in any dish. Each bulb typically contains around five large, easy-to-peel cloves. Unlike softnecks, hardneck types like this one have minimal or no outer wrappers, making them a favourite for chefs. Bonus: planting garlic around the garden is said to deter pests like aphids and may help suppress fungal issues naturally.

Planting & Care

Garlic Planting Guide

  • Plant cloves from September to the end of November
  • Garlic is not suited for growing in containers. Select an area to plant with rich, well draining soil and full sun exposure.
  • Separate the cloves and plant each one 10-15cm apart with the pointed end facing up. Plant the cloves 5cm deep.
  • Water as needed, and keep the area well weeded.
  • When the top leaves begin to dry out (between June and August), you can gently harvest. Leave bulbs out to dry (cure) for at least a week.
