How to Plant Begonias in Canada
Begonias are a popular choice for Canadian gardens, containers, and hanging baskets thanks to their vibrant blooms and tolerance for partial shade. Follow these simple steps to successfully plant and grow begonia tubers.
When to Plant Begonias in Canada
Begonia tubers are tender and cannot withstand frost, so they should be planted only after all danger of frost has passed and soil temperatures are consistently warm. In most parts of Canada, May is a good time to plant begonias outdoors.
Many gardeners choose to start begonia tubers in pots indoors in early spring. Place them in a greenhouse or a bright, frost-free location to give them a head start before moving them outside after the last frost date. Waiting until the soil has warmed helps begonias establish quickly and produce vibrant summer blooms.
Where to Plant Begonias
Choose a location with partial shade or light shade, as begonias perform best when protected from harsh, direct midday sun. They prefer well-drained soil or a good-quality potting mix that will not stay soggy, since overly wet conditions can lead to tuber rot.
Begonias grow well in sheltered garden beds, patio containers, and hanging baskets, as long as the roots remain moist but not waterlogged.
How to Plant Begonia Tubers
Plant begonia tubers with the rounded side facing downward and the dipped side facing up. Place them just below the soil surface so the top of the tuber sits about 1–2 cm under the soil.
Space tubers 15–20 cm apart in containers or 20–30 cm apart in garden beds to allow room for growth. Water thoroughly after planting, then keep the soil lightly moist as new shoots begin to emerge.
Growing and Caring for Begonias
Once established, begonias require consistent moisture. Water when the topsoil begins to dry, but avoid leaving plants in wet soil. Remove faded flowers regularly to encourage continuous blooming throughout summer and into autumn.
In windy locations, rotating containers occasionally can help promote even growth. If you plan to lift tubers for the winter, allow them to dry fully and store them in a cool, dry place until the next growing season.
