How to Plant Hellebores: Christmas & Lenten Rose

Planting guide

Hellebores are among the most treasured plants in the winter garden, and for good reason. They bloom when almost nothing else dares, often pushing their nodding flowers up through snow. The group includes the Christmas rose (Helleborus niger), which blooms in midwinter, and the Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis), which follows in late winter and early spring. Long-lived, shade-loving, and deer-resistant, hellebores reward a little patience with decades of early colour. At Coast Farms, we select hellebores suited to Canadian gardens, and this guide covers everything you need to plant and grow them well.

When to Plant

Plant Helleborus bare roots in fall or early spring, when temperatures are cool and the soil is workable. Cool-season planting gives roots time to establish before summer heat or deep winter cold. Plant bare roots promptly after arrival for the best chance of success.

Where to Plant

Choose a partially shaded location, such as beneath deciduous trees or along woodland-style borders. Hellebores thrive in rich, well-drained soil that holds some moisture without becoming waterlogged. They're excellent for shaded beds, cottage gardens, and any spot where you want early-season colour, since they're among the first plants to bloom as winter recedes.

How to Plant

Soak bare roots in water for a few hours before planting to rehydrate them. Dig a hole large enough to spread the roots out comfortably. Position the plant so the crown sits level with, or just slightly below, the soil surface. Planting too deep discourages flowering. Backfill, firm gently around the roots, and water thoroughly. Space plants about 45 to 60 cm (18 to 24 inches) apart to allow for mature growth.

Ongoing Care

Water regularly through the first growing season to establish a strong root system, especially in dry spells. Each spring, apply compost or organic matter around the base to improve soil health and support flowering. In late winter, remove damaged or older foliage to showcase the emerging blooms and keep plants tidy. Hellebores are low maintenance once established and can stay in the same spot for many years. Divide mature clumps only when necessary, as they often perform best left undisturbed.

Christmas Rose vs Lenten Rose

The two most popular hellebores are easy to tell apart once you know them:

  • Christmas rose (Helleborus niger): pure white, outward-facing flowers that open in midwinter, sometimes around the holidays in milder areas
  • Lenten rose (Helleborus orientalis): a wider colour range, including the ruffled "Double Ellen" varieties in picotee, red, and pink, blooming in late winter into early spring

Both are hardy, shade-loving, and long-lived, and both are planted and cared for the same way.
