Tulips

How to Plant Tulip Bulbs
When to plant:
The best time to plant tulip bulbs is in autumn—between October
and mid-December. Although you might receive your tulip bulbs as early as
September, it’s important to wait until the weather cools down before planting.
Until then, store your bulbs in a cool, dry place, away from rodents
like mice and squirrels.
Where to plant:
Tulips grow beautifully in garden borders, flower beds, or in
patio containers. If planting in heavy clay soil, improve drainage by mixing in
compost, bark, grit or sand. Tulips dislike sitting in soggy soil, so good
drainage is essential to prevent rot. Tulips grow best in full sun but can also
tolerate partial or dappled shade. Choose a spot with plenty of light to
encourage strong stems and vivid blooms.
How to plant:
Plant your tulip bulbs 15–20cm deep, with the pointed end
facing up. In containers, space bulbs around 10cm apart for a lush, full
display. In garden beds, you can leave a little more room between each bulb if
preferred. Water in well once when planted.
Note on Containers:
If you live in a hardiness zone that is between 3-6,
consider bringing your containers of tulip bulbs indoors for the winter. A
dark, well-ventilated basement or garage with a temperature of no more than 15
degrees Celsius is best.
