Actaea ‘Black Negligee’, commonly known as Bugbane, is a shade-loving perennial prized for its dramatic, deeply cut, purplish-black foliage. In late summer to early fall, tall, elegant spires of creamy white, fragrant flowers rise above the dark leaves, creating a striking contrast and a woodland garden focal point. Perfect for shaded borders, woodland gardens, and moisture-retentive soils rich in organic matter, this perennial thrives in partial to full shade and benefits from protection against strong winds. Slow to establish but long-lived, ‘Black Negligee’ combines architectural foliage with aromatic blooms for a sophisticated garden display.

Actaea Planting & Care

(Actaea Black Negligee)

  • Choose a location with good sun exposure (generally 6-8 hours of sun per day in the summer).
  • Plant after the last spring frost when soil has warmed up and the roots will thrive.
  • Loosen soil and dig a hole about twice as deep a the plant. 
  • Cover the plant with soil and water well to ensure it gets a good start.
  • Continue to water as needed keeping the soil moist but not waterlogged.
