Planting & Care

Dicentra Planting Guide

  • Plant bare root dicentra in early spring as soon as the soil can be worked, while plants are still dormant. Soak roots in water for 3–6 hours before planting.
  • Choose partial to dappled shade—morning sun with afternoon shade is ideal. Plant in moist, humus-rich, well-drained soil and avoid soggy or low-lying areas.
  • Dig a wide hole and set the crown about 2–5 cm (1″) below soil level, spreading roots gently. Space plants 30–90 cm (12–36″) apart and water well after planting.
  • Keep soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool during warm weather.
  • Foliage may naturally die back after flowering—this is normal. Cut back once yellowed and allow surrounding plants to fill in the space.
