Few spring bulbs make a statement like Scilla siberica. Also known as Siberian squill, this little bulb opens some of the truest blue flowers in the garden — nodding, star-shaped blooms in vivid cobalt that appear in early spring, often while frost still lingers. At just 10–15 cm tall, it's small in stature but unforgettable in effect, especially planted in drifts.
Siberian squill is one of the easiest and most rewarding bulbs you can grow in a Canadian garden. Plant it once in fall and it naturalizes freely, returning a little fuller each spring until it forms a sweep of blue beneath trees, along borders, and even through lawns. It's happy in full sun or part shade, thrives under deciduous trees that leaf out after it blooms, and is reliably deer and rodent resistant. As one of the first nectar sources of the year, it's a favourite of early-waking bees.
