Running a small, online plant shop is seasonal. Everything we do leads up to spring. The planning, the plant selection, the photos, the website updates. It all builds toward the moment gardeners start thinking about the growing season again.
While we are new to the online world, we have many years of experience working with plants. This month, something amazing happened and we’re really excited to share it with our Coast Farms community!
We received over 200 spring pre-orders at Coast Farms this month!
For big garden retailers that number might not sound like much, but for a small Canadian online plant shop this is so encouraging. It means people are already thinking about their gardens and choosing their plants early to get the best quality and selection. Your trust in us and our quality products means everything.
Along with this exciting development for us, we wanted to share a bit about what we’ve been seeing so far this year.
Gardeners Are Planning Earlier
One thing we’ve noticed is that people are planning their gardens earlier than before.
Even while it’s still cold outside, many gardeners are already browsing plants and deciding what they want to grow. Winter is when a lot of the garden dreaming happens.
People start asking questions like:
-
What flowers should I grow this year?
-
Which dahlias did well last season?
-
What new varieties should I try?
By the time spring gets close, many gardeners already have a plan.
That’s where spring pre-orders come in. It lets people reserve the plants they want before the season gets busy. Shipping happens in late April to early May depending on your hardiness zone.
Dahlias Are Still the Most Popular
Over the last few years, we continue to see huge demand for dahlias. From decorative types to pompons, if there’s one plant that always stands out, it’s dahlias.
This year especially, we are seeing strong demand for dahlia tubers in Canada, especially from gardeners who grow flowers for cutting. Dahlias are colourful, productive, and surprisingly easy to grow once you get the hang of them. We have worked hard to source some of the most unique and prolific dahlia varieties available in the Canadian market today.
Some gardeners collect different varieties each year. Others are planting dahlias for the first time.
Either way, they tend to sell quickly once people start planning their spring gardens.
The Spring Garden Mindset
We have had fun e-meeting some of our customers throughout Canada - from Regina, Saskatchewan to Windsor, Ontario all the way to St. John’s, Newfoundland. And even in the middle of winter in Canada, they are thinking about warm soil, new plants, and flowers starting to bloom.
We see this every year when traffic on the site starts picking up. People are browsing varieties, reading planting guides, and figuring out what they want to grow. All while the ground is still covered in a thick blanket of snow throughout most of Canada.
Some are building full cut flower gardens.
Some just want a few plants to brighten up their yard.
Both are part of the same excitement that comes with spring planting.
Getting Ready for Shipping Season
With 200 pre-orders already placed in the month of February alone, Coast Farms is getting ready for the busy part of the season.
That means checking inventory, organizing varieties, and preparing for shipping when planting season arrives across Canada.
Timing matters with plants. They need to arrive when the weather is right so they can go straight into the garden.
Every region warms up a little differently, so we plan our shipping windows carefully.
A Small Milestone for Coast Farms
Hitting 200 spring pre-orders in February has been so encouraging for our small team. Thank you so much for planning your spring garden with us!
