Buying plants online shouldn’t feel risky. It should feel easy, reliable and suited to where you live.
That belief is what led us to start Coast Farms, a Canadian online nursery focused on dahlias, roses, flower bulbs, and perennial plants that grow well in Canadian gardens.
This post shares why we started Coast Farms and what guides how we grow and ship plants today.
The Problem We Saw
Before Coast Farms, we faced the same issues many Canadian gardeners still deal with.
Plants arrived too early or too late to plant. Some plants were stressed from spending too long in transit. Many online nurseries followed fixed shipping schedules that did not match Canadian weather or planting windows.
We knew there was a better way to serve Canadian gardeners.
Building a Nursery for Canadian Growing Conditions
Coast Farms is based in British Columbia, and everything we do is shaped by our understanding of Canadian growing conditions and hardiness zones.
This means:
-
Choosing plant varieties that perform well in Canada
-
Planning shipping around real planting windows
-
Adjusting schedules based on weather, not order dates
From the West Coast to Ontario and Atlantic Canada, our goal is to help gardeners start with healthy plants at the right planting time.
What We Focus On Growing
Our plant selection is seasonal and changes throughout the year.
Dahlias
Dahlias are a major focus at Coast Farms. We select dahlia tubers based on strong growth, reliable flowering, and performance in Canadian gardens.
All of our varieties are offered as spring pre-orders, allowing gardeners to secure popular selections before planting season.
Flower Bulbs
We also offer seasonal flower bulbs such as tulips, daffodils, ranunculus, and anemones. These are shipped during the correct planting windows in fall or spring to support healthy roots and strong blooms.
Bare Root Plants and Perennials
Our selection includes bare root roses and carefully chosen perennials. Shipping these plants dormant and in bare root format helps reduce stress and improves establishment once planted.
Why Seasonal Shipping Matters
We do not ship plants as soon as an order is placed. Pre-orders allow you to get your hands on your favourite varieties well in advance of the ideal planting window.
Instead, we wait until conditions are right for planting. This helps protect plants from cold damage, heat stress, and unnecessary handling.
Customers are notified when their order is ready to ship, so there are no surprises.
What We Want for Canadian Gardeners
Coast Farms exists to make online plant shopping more dependable.
We focus on:
-
Healthy, well-timed plants
-
Clear and honest information
-
Supporting gardeners after delivery, not just before checkout
Our goal is to help gardens grow successfully, season after season.
Growing One Season at a Time
We continue to learn and improve with every growing season.
By listening to our customers and paying attention to how plants perform in real Canadian gardens, we refine our selection and our process year after year.
Thank you for growing with Coast Farms.
