How to Plant Eremurus (Foxtail Lily) Tubers
When to plant:
Eremurus, also known as Foxtail Lilies, should be planted outdoors in mid to late autumn so they can establish before winter dormancy.
Where to plant:
Choose a sunny, sheltered border with well draining soil. These dramatic perennials dislike sitting in waterlogged ground, so improving drainage is essential—especially in heavier soils.
Preparing the tubers:
Before planting, soak the tubers in water for 2–3 hours to help them rehydrate and settle in more quickly.
Planting depth and method:
Dig a hole about 15–20 cm deep and create a small mound of light soil, grit, or sand in the centre. Arrange the tuber with the roots spread downwards and the crown resting just below the soil surface. Any visible shoots or “eyes” should face upwards.
Spacing:
Plant Eremurus tubers around 15–20 cm apart to give them enough room to develop their tall, impressive flower spikes.
After planting:
Backfill with soil, firm gently, and water well to help them establish. Once planted, allow the tubers to remain dormant through winter without further watering. In spring, fresh foliage will emerge, followed by tall, striking flower spikes in early summer.
