The Ancient Mariner (Ausoutcry) is a bare root English shrub rose bred by David Austin that produces masses of large, many-petalled blooms in a glowing mid pink, gradually paling towards the edges as the flowers open. Each bloom eventually reveals a charming cluster of golden stamens, complemented by a medium-strong myrrh fragrance and excellent repeat flowering throughout the season. This healthy, bushy variety forms a well-shaped, upright shrub, reaching approximately 125 cm tall and wide. Perfect for borders, beds, rose hedges, containers, and cottage gardens, The Ancient Mariner brings abundant blooms, beautiful colour, and rich fragrance to Canadian gardens.

Rose Planting & Care

(David Austin Rose - The Ancient Mariner)

  • Rehydrate your rose. Unpack the rose quickly after receiving, trim 1/2" off the root tips and canes to keep them fresh.
  • Soak the roots up to the base of the cane for 2 hours - overnight.
  • Choose a site with a minimum of 4 hours of sun per day and dig a hole twice as wide as the root system and as deep as the roots (typically 16" wide x 16" deep)
  • Loosen the soil at the bottom the hole for better root growth then create a small mound in the base of the hole and drape the roots around it.
  • position the bud union (where shoots emerge) at ground level and backfill with the original soil. Lightly firm the soil around the plant.
  • Give the rose a good initial watering after plant and maintain regular watering. Keep the soil moist but not soggy.
